Resistance forces fighting U.S. and allied troops in Iraq number no more than 5,000, the American general leading the military efforts there said on Thursday, but the insurgency is showing higher levels of coordination. U.S. officials previously have expressed uncertainty over the number and nature of the resistance forces, which have carried out increasingly bold and deadly attacks on American and allied troops and other targets. On Wednesday, suicide bombers devastated an Italian military police base in Nassiriya, killing at least 18 Italians. “In all, I would say that the force of people actively armed and operating against us does not exceed 5,000,” Gen.
