Turkey was warned yesterday that failure to help achieve a peace settlement in Cyprus would damage its chances of joining the European Union. The European commission and member states ignored intensive last-minute lobbying by Ankara and said bluntly that Turkish membership could face “a serious obstacle” if Cyprus was not reunited before May. Turkey is due to be told by the EU by next December whether it has met the criteria to qualify to start negotiations.
