The resentment felt by Muslims toward the United States is mainly due to Washington’s support for Israel, and not only its support of dictatorships, Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood warned. “There is a great deal of truth in the fact that US support to tyrannical regimes is one reason for the hatred expressed toward the United States,” said the Brotherhood’s leader, Maamoun al-Hodeibi. “But the most important reason for the Muslim people’s hatred of the United States is its total bias toward the Zionist entity … and US aggression in Iraq and Afghanistan; Bush ignored these,” Hodeibi told AFP. He said that if Bush wants to lend credibility to his speech, “he had better stop (Israeli Prime Minister Ariel) Sharon from using US weapons to slaughter the Palestinians.” The banned but tolerated Brotherhood is the largest opposition group in Egypt.
