The wife of al-Qaeda suspect says the Government gave her the run-around, reports Freya Petersen. The wife of suspected al-Qaeda member Willie Brigitte says she was sent a bill of $15,000 by the Immigration Department for her husband’s detention in Villawood and his deportation to France. Melanie Brown also confirmed to the Herald she had served with the Australian Defence Force in East Timor, but had applied for a discharge in September last year. In a series of phone interviews, Ms Brown said she may not pay the itemised bill sent to her by the department to cover the costs of her husband’s deportation. “I expected the $128 a day [for Villawood]. But I didn’t expect to pay for the people who escorted him,” she said. She detailed Brigitte’s last days in Australia before he was deported on October 17. Full Story
