A British man has been arrested in Pakistan on suspicion of having links to al-Qaeda, the Pakistani authorities have confirmed. Tariq Mahmud was arrested two days ago and is being questioned about possible links with militants inside and outside the country, said Masood Khan, a spokesman for Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He said that Mr Mahmud had moved to Pakistan from Birmingham three years ago and was in the custody of the Pakistani security agencies. A Foreign Office spokeswoman told the BBC that consulate staff were making inquiries into the matter. Mr Mahmud, who is reported to be in his 30s, is said to have been arrested in the Pakistani capital Islamabad in an operation involving Pakistani and US intelligence officials.
