Three American soldiers were killed and four were wounded in separate mortar and gunfire attacks north of Baghdad today, , the military said. In the city of Samarra, two Fourth Infantry Division soldiers were killed and four were wounded when mortar shells struck their base, a statement from Central Command said. Earlier, a soldier attached to the 101st Airborne Division was killed by small-arms fire in the city of Mosul, the military said. Both incidents are being investigated, the Central Command said. A spokesman, Maj. Pete Mitchell, said that in the Mosul attack the lone gunman was on foot and fled after opening fire. “In most of these attacks we are finding they are using AK-47’s,” Major Mitchell said by telephone from Command headquarters in Florida. “As in every attack, our first consideration is the possibility that it is remnants of the regime or foreign fighters.
