Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz, a chief architect of the U.S. “war on terror,” flew into Baghdad on Friday aiming to help speed transfer of control of Iraq from American forces to Iraqis. Wolfowitz, visiting for the second time in three months amid growing concern at home about escalating attacks on American troops, said Iraqis increasingly were “putting their lives on the line to defend their country and build a free and prosperous future.” Talking on arrival in Baghdad, he said Iraqis and Americans were “taking the fight to the enemy” in an effort to defeat forces that would thwart that aim.
