Extradition proceedings against Chechen diplomat Akhmed Zakayev have entered their final stage in London. Mr Zakayev’s lawyers argued that he faces persecution if he is extradited to Russia to face charges of mass murder, Bow Street magistrates heard on Tuesday. He faces 13 charges, including kidnap, taking part in the murder of more than 300 militia officers and levying war. His lawyer, Edward Fitzgerald QC, told the court that Chechens were tortured and persecuted in Russian prisons because of their nationality. Full Story
