Police in Indian-administered Kashmir detained an influential pro-independence leader and three of his colleagues, sparking protests by their supporters, officials said. They said Wednesday Yasin Malik, the chairman of the pro-independence Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) and three other leaders were picked up by police as they left their office in Srinagar, the summer capital, for the southern township of Tral. JKLF spokesman Tahir Mir told AFP they were on the way to Tral for a signature campaign launched by the front three months ago to press for the involvement of Kashmiris in talks to resolve the dispute over the region.
