TODAY’S CIOs look back and laugh at early computer viruses. They were often benign, affected just a couple of machines and were easy to contain and get rid of. Every now and then one did some real damage, but mostly they were just an annoyance. That was back in the days when you could keep half the company’s data on a floppy disk. Now viruses and worms sweep the world in hours, choking networks and disrupting systems for weeks. Just ask Telstra about the Swen virus. August was probably the worst month ever for internet worm attacks, and no-one is predicting it’s going to get easier to keep companies’ data safe. According to Gartner’s Steve Bittinger, spending on security worldwide has grown to the point that it is visible on the IT spending pie chart, at about 5 per cent of the average IT budget. In short, the board now knows what the company spends on IT security. Pushing the other way, senior executives whose home systems have been trashed by worms and viruses want guarantees that the company is protected. Full Story
