Assailants ambushed a U.S. Army foot patrol outside Fallujah at midday Monday, killing one American and wounding five others in the second day of attacks in this anti-U.S. hotbed, the American command reported. Two civilians also were killed. The patrol, from the 82nd Airborne Division, was first hit by an exploding homemade bomb, and then by small-arms fire, the military said. Americans then raided a nearby mosque in an apparent search for the attackers, and detained three Iraqis. The bodies of two civilians were taken to Fallujah General Hospital, where doctors said one was a Syrian truck driver who was hauling cement from Lebanon to Baghdad when he was caught in the attack.
