Indian police have fired tear gas and rubber bullets at stone-throwing Hindu activists trying to stage a rally in the northern holy town of Ayodhya. The activists had defied an official ban by trying to march in support of demands for the building of a temple on the site in Ayodhya that is claimed by both Hindus and Muslims. At the climax of the confrontation, police arrested up to 1,000 activists, taking them away in buses. Click here to see a plan of the disputed site.
