Analysts say last week’s Tamil-Muslim clashes in Kinniya, in the Eastern district of Trincomalee, are just the tip of the iceberg, as simmering tensions between the two communities are threatening the region’s fragile peace. Violence erupted after a group of Tamil squatters forcibly occupied a plot of land allocated to the Kinniya Muslim school by the government. Following the riots, the local police arrested one Muslim youth for attacking a Tamil. The area’s Muslims promptly surrounded the police station to demand his release. Students of the South-Eastern University in the Eastern district staged a series of protests against last week’s riots.
