Wary members of the U.N. Security Council considered a new U.S. draft resolution Tuesday aimed at enlisting broader international support for Washington’s struggle to stabilize Iraq. The draft, the third effort since August by the United States to win backing from the United Nations, aims to meet objections to earlier versions by giving Iraqi leaders a December 15 deadline to set a timetable for elections. It is being circulated against a backdrop of multiple daily attacks on U.S.-led forces and Iraqis considered to be supporting them and a worsening row between Washington and Baghdad over the deployment of Turkish troops in Iraq. Iraqi oil official Nabeel Musawi said Tuesday Oil Minister Ibrahim Bahr al-Uloum had survived an assassination attempt at the weekend when a man emerged from a car which overtook their motorcade in Baghdad and began firing an AK-47.
