A young Shiite cleric whose militia patrols parts of a Baghdad slum said he was forming his own cabinet, a move seen as a challenge to the U.S.-appointed Governing Council, which received the news coolly. Moqtada Sadr, who has denounced the U.S. occupation and the council, announced the creation of the unnamed, apparently personal government at Friday prayers in Kufa, near the holy city of Najaf. “Although this might entail some danger to my person, I have created some cabinet posts in our government,” he said. “I want a state of freedom and democracy.” He called on his followers to stage “peaceful demonstrations that express your agreement.” Full Story
