SU Network Administrators Battle System-Crippling Viruses. A band of computer-savvy IT employees at Shenandoah University almost did it. All summer, they stood guard against waves of computer viruses and e-mail worms that had crippled computer systems around the world. Every day, the Institutional Computing Department, located in the back of the basement of SU’s library, monitored the campus network for computers demanding high Internet bandwith or giving off other telltale signs of a virus. Security patches and repair software were sent out over the network routinely. The diligence through July and August seemed to pay off. While the 1-2-3 punch of the “Blaster” worm, the “SoBig.F” virus, and “Nachi” infiltrated U.S. military computers and caused delays along the CSX eastern rail corridor, SU was almost entirely untouched, said Network Administrator Kenneth Lambert.
