Israel took its war on suicide bombers to Syria on Sunday, sending warplanes into that country for the first time in more than 20 years to strike alleged Palestinian militant training camps. The airstrike, a day after a female suicide bomber killed 19 Israelis in the port city of Haifa, was seen by many Arab countries as a dramatic escalation of Israel’s pursuit of militants. It also deepened concerns that three years of Israeli-Palestinian violence could engulf a region already enflamed by the U.S. occupation of Iraq. The United States, embroiled in trying to establish a democratic government in Iraq and salvage a ”road map” to Israeli-Palestinian peace, urged Israel and Syria to do nothing that would heighten tensions or lead to hostilities in the Middle East.
