Brazilian police said on Friday they have evidence that Colombian Marxist guerrillas are recruiting Brazilian Indians as Colombia’s war presses up to the border of its giant neighbor. They cited the story of two Indians who said they were drafted into the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, Colombia’s biggest guerrilla group known as FARC, as proof of what they believe is an increasing problem. “This is the first official documentation of recruitment, based on evidence of family members and those recruited,” said a spokesman for the federal police in the town of Sao Gabriel da Cachoeira in Brazil’s remote “dog’s head” Amazon region. “It is confirmation the guerrillas are recruiting Brazilians, the majority of them Indians.” Brazilian police have long suspected FARC and drugs traffickers of using Brazilian Indians for forced labor to carry supplies and clear clandestine air strips in the Amazon jungle.
