The IDF has serious problems protecting its soldiers, weapons, vehicles, and other equipment, and budget problems are no excuse, State Comptroller Eliezer Goldberg said on Tuesday, during a ceremony at which he presented the first part of his annual report to Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin. Most of the 352-page report was devoted to security matters and covered the Defense Ministry, the IDF, the Israel Aircraft and Military Industries and the Shin Bet. Goldberg’s comments served as a pre-emptive strike against defense officials not to use cutbacks in the IDF’s budget to justify the flaws and shortcomings outlined in the report. “I do not accept the claim that because of budgeting pressures, important matters are not dealt with properly,” Goldberg said. “If I took such claims seriously, I might as well close my office, because I hear that every time.
