Indonesian prosecutors demanded on Tuesday that a court in troubled Aceh province sentence two leading negotiators of a separatist group to lengthy periods in jail for involvement in terror crimes. The prosecution said negotiators Sofyan Ibrahim Tiba and Nashiruddin Ahmad were connected to the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) and therefore collaborating with a movement accused of carrying out terror attacks in Aceh and Jakarta. Both men also face treason charges over the accusations of involvement in rebellion. Prosecutors urged judges to sentence Tiba to 18 years in jail while their colleagues in the trial of Ahmad sought 16 years. “I know that all of this is a game,” Tiba said after the trial session. Indonesia put strife-torn Aceh under martial law on May 19 and launched a military campaign to crush GAM rebels after peace talks failed to end a war that has killed more than 10,000 people since 1976.
