An Islamist militant described as the intellectual mastermind of the Bali bombings, the most deadly terrorist attacks since September 11, was sentenced to death yesterday by an Indonesian panel of judges. Imam Samudra, 33, a computer expert who fought alongside Afghan mojahedin and brought jihad home to his native Indonesia, punched the air and rocked in his seat as the sentence was read out in the Bali courtroom. His defiance in the face of the sentence of death at the hands of a 15-man paramilitary firing squad was not a surprise. He showed no remorse for his acts and boasted that he wanted to die a martyr.
