Two of the biggest web hosting companies, Rackspace Managed Hosting and Rackshack, were subjected to distributed denial of service attacks last week. According to Netcraft News, the attack on Rackspace took place on August 26, just a day after the company had announced it was launching a service to mitigate such attacks. The attack on Rackshack took place on the morning of August 28. Rackspace and Rackshack collectively account for around 2.5 percent of the internet’s active web sites. There have also recently been a spate of DDoS attacks on anti-spam databases, forcing one of the biggest, Osirusoft, to close down. Thor Larholm, senior security researcher with PivX Solutions, said the DDoS attack was the last straw that broke the back of the Osirusoft service, owned and run by Joe Jared. Full Story
