A former University of Arizona graduate student, in federal custody since June, has been deported without charges to his native Saudi Arabia. Muhammad Al-Qudhai’een, a Saudi citizen and father of five, had been held in a federal prison in Virginia. Al-Qudhai’een’s wife, friends and Islamic leaders had been unable to glean information about his detention, except that he was being held as a material witness. Federal officials have still not disclosed specifically why Al-Qudhai’een was detained. Deedra Abboud, of the Council on American Islamic Relations in Phoenix, said she was told Al-Qudhai’een had been recently deported without charges. He called a friend in Tucson after arriving in Saudi Arabia, Abboud told Thursday’s edition of the Arizona Daily Star.
