A car exploded near the main British military base in the Iraqi city of Basra on Friday but there were no casualties, witnesses said. The blast, which caused a fire that was quickly extinguished, damaged two cars around 200 yards from the entrance to the base in the southern city, a Reuters reporter on the scene said. People took water from a nearby river to put out the blaze. The owner of one of the cars said someone had driven up to his vehicle and thrown an explosive device into it. He was out of his car at the time. Britain’s Ministry of Defense confirmed that a “small explosion” had taken place near its headquarters at Iraq’s second city. Earlier on Friday, a car bomb in the Shi’ite holy city of Najaf killed at least 75 people including a top cleric who cooperated with U.S.-led occupation forces. Full Story
