Palestinian gunmen shot and killed a Jewish settler and wounded his pregnant wife Friday in a West Bank roadside ambush that followed Israel’s killing of an Islamic militant in a helicopter strike in the Gaza Strip. “They had driven to his parents and dropped off their 14-month-old baby just 10 minutes earlier, and then headed off for a holiday weekend,” Pinhas Wallerstein, a settler official, told Israel Radio. Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, an armed group in Palestinian President Yasser Arafat’s Fatah faction, claimed responsibility for the attack near the Jewish settlement of Kochav Hashachar, east of the Palestinian-ruled city of Ramallah. Since the collapse last week of a truce, Israel and the Palestinians have settled into a familiar pattern of bloodshed, involving a Jerusalem suicide bombing followed by several of what Palestinians term “assassinations” of their militants.
