The latest march of the variations of the SoBig virus through the world’s computers has been so intense that it’s easy to forget that SoBig itself is nothing new. Appearing this past January in the midst of a flurry of high-threat hacks, SoBig would have been lost to history were it not for its creator’s particular brand of arrogance. The hacker in question seems to be using the Internet as a proving ground for staged releases, deployments, and mutations, timed to take effect in sequence. The result is ongoing disruption of systems, the allocation of already taxed security resources to combat it, and continued media attention.
