A fierce encounter between security forces and two militants holed up in a hotel here since Wednesday night, ended early on Thursday morning with five people dead and several people injured. The dead included Javeed Ahmad Shah, former National Conference MLC, his personal bodyguard and an unidentified man and the two militants. Five security personnel, including deputy inspector general (operations), BSF, were also injured in the exchange of fire with the militants near the Central Telegraph Office complex at Exchange Road here on Thursday. According to BSF spokesman, about 14 civilians holed up in Hotel Greenway, where the two militants had taken refuge after security forces repulsed their attempt to enter the CTO complex late on Wednesday night, were rescued at about 11 pm. The security forces resumed operation in the morning on Thursday, when fire broke out in the hotel. Following this, security forces stormed the hotel and took control of the hotel. National Conference leader Javeed Shah, previously a constable in Jammu and Kashmir Police, deserted the force in 1990 to become a militant. Shah was chief commander of militant outfit Al-Fateh till 1994, when he surrendered before the Jammu and Kashmir Police the same year. Full Story
