Dozens of masked gunmen burst into a medical clinic and kidnapped five Chechens waiting to see a doctor, police said Friday. Some 30 to 40 gunmen entered the Sunzha district hospital Thursday in the region of Ingushetia, near war-battered Chechnya, according to the region’s Interior Ministry. Threatening gunfire, they forced five people into two trucks. The men are believed to have shot one captive with a pistol and hit a doctor in the head with a rifle butt, the ministry said. Police believe the attackers were members of the security service of Chechnya’s Moscow-appointed acting president, Akhmad Kadyrov, ministry officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
