A massive explosion killed 13 militiamen and injured 21 others helping collect weapons in a disarmament drive in northern Afghanistan, a local official said. “A truck full of weapons exploded in Aqcha district, killing 13 soldiers and injuring 21 more,” said Mohammad Qul Zahiri, deputy police chief for the northern province of Jawzjan which borders Turkmenistan. The injured were in a serious condition in hospital in the Jawzjan provincial capital Sheberghan. Zahiri, speaking from Sheberghan, said the blast Monday was believed to be an accident rather than an attack. The cause was still being investigated. The explosion occurred at 6:00 am (0130 GMT) as the militiamen had just finished loading the truck with around 800 rifles, light machine guns, tank rounds and other ammunition, Zahiri said.
