Liberia’s President Charles Taylor quit on Monday and flew into exile under pressure from the world community, which hopes his departure will speed an end to violence that has racked West Africa for nearly 14 years. Taylor, accused of stoking conflict in neighboring states as well as at home, left behind a shattered nation, founded by freed American slaves in the 19th century as a haven of liberty. The former warlord had little choice. He was boxed in by rebels, under U.N. sanctions, wanted by Sierra Leone’s war crimes court and told to quit by President Bush.
