Saudi Arabia is continuing its bloody domestic crackdown on al-Qaeda-linked militants while preparing to launch a diplomatic offensive to defend itself against US accusations of complicity in the 9/11 terror strikes. In another coup in its hunt for Saudi-based militants, security forces on Monday killed six Saudi nationals Riyadh linked with Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaeda terror network in a shootout in a farm in the northern Qassim province. The clash also left two policemen dead and nine others, all but one of them police, injured. Four people were also arrested on suspicion of harbouring the militants on the farm. “We will crack down hard (on militants) and we will eliminate them without mercy from our country to protect our citizens and defend the kingdom and its higher interests,” Interior Minister Prince Nayef bin Abdul Aziz vowed in an interview with the Saudi-owned Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper on Tuesday.
