Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez said Sunday that a plot was being hatched in the Dominican Republic to assassinate him and he appealed to the president of that nation for help. Chavez, in his weekly television program, claimed he had evidence of the conspiracy. “An assassination is being prepared,” the president said. He blamed his opponents but did not identify them further. Chavez was elected president in 1998 and re-elected in 2000 after pushing through a new constitution that he called a cornerstone of a revolution to end social injustice. Venezuela’s opposition wants a referendum this year, accusing Chavez of grabbing power, ruining the economy with leftist policies and ignoring corruption in his government. Full Story
