The Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) today said that it would hold negotiations with the Surya Bahadur Thapa government only if the king made a public statement that the present government represented him. In a two-page letter sent to the government through facilitators, Dr Baburam Bhattarai, the chief negotiator of the CPN-Maoist, said the party would ideally want to hold direct talks with the king. “If that is not possible, the king will have to make a public statement that the Thapa government represents him,” Dr Bhattarai has said in the statement. Government spokesperson and a member of the government negotiating team, Kamal Thapa, said that the government was committed to the peace process and was studying the letter sent by the Maoists. “We will be responding in an appropriate manner,” he said. “We had hoped that the six rounds of informal talks with the Maoists and a formal letter from the government were enough to create conducive environment for resuming dialogue.” Thapa, however, added that the government would maintain maximum patience and flexibility to bring back the peace process that seems to be slipping away.
