Mortar rounds slammed a church Saturday where residents of Monrovia had fled to safety, killing at least seven — the second consecutive day shells hit a site housing frightened civilians. The fierce fighting between rebels seeking to topple Liberian President Charles Taylor and government troops ushered in war-torn Liberia’s Independence Day, but help was on the way as Liberia’s West African neighbors prepared to send peacekeeping troops and President Bush on Friday ordered the Marines to the region to back the deployment. The Marine force, which U.S. officials say is likely to be about 2,000 strong, will be positioned on ships off the Liberian coast. On Friday, a mortal shell ripped into a school that has been serving as a refugee camp for hundreds who lost or fled their homes, killing at least 12 people.
