An explosion has rocked a bridge in the south of the unruly Mediterranean island of Corsica, but no one was hurt, police said. The explosion early on Saturday left a massive crater in a bridge leading to a waste center near the village of Viggianello, near Propriano in southern Corsica. No one has claimed responsibility. Corsican separatists earlier this month took credit for a spate of weekend bombings on the island and in the city of Nice on France’s southern Riviera coast. Last week they announced the end of a cease-fire to protest government policy towards the island, where violence by militant groups seeking independence from France has been part of life for decades.
