It’s widely believed that the next war would be fought in the arena of information, not on a conventional battlefield. With various countries becoming interconnected, and with various information generators within each country (such as banking, insurance, airline and railway reservation, education, health, defence and other systems) getting connected to each other, nations are move vulnerable than ever before to ‘cyber attacks’. Several countries around the world have passed legislations to make it a crime to attack their information resources, and have taken steps to protect their own information infrastructure. India is in the forefront in this mission. The Government of India (GoI) has set up a non-profit society called ‘Society for Electronic Transactions and Security’ (SETS) headed by Dr R Chidambaram, Principal Scientific Adviser to the GoI, following a recommendation by the National Task Force, to adapt, develop and promote the study and dissemination of knowledge in the area of Information Transactions, with particular reference to Information Security.
