A Paris court Wednesday ordered the release of the leader of the political wing of the Iranian People’s Mujahideen, held on suspicion of planning possible terrorist attacks, judicial officials said. Maryam Rajavi was arrested last month in a French crackdown on Iran’s largest armed opposition group that sparked dramatic protests across Europe in which several people set themselves on fire. The public prosecutor had recommended Rajavi, the charismatic head of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), remain in detention as a possible threat to public order. Rajavi and 16 other associates are under investigation on a charge of “association with criminals in connection with a terrorist enterprise.” The Paris appeals court set bail at 80,000 euros ($92,350) and ordered Rajavi to live at her Auvers-sur-Oise base just outside Paris and not leave France during the investigation.
