A Northern Virginia man accused of training to be part of a jihad, or holy war, was described by his wife and a local attorney Sunday as a family man who participated in weekend paintball outings for sport, not for terrorism. ”This whole idea of jihad and paintball is total nonsense,” said Virginia lawyer Ashraf Nubani, a friend of Hammad Abdur-Raheem, one of 11 people named in a 42-count federal indictment unsealed last week in Alexandria, Va. ”There is nothing sinister here.” The court documents allege that Abdur-Raheem and the others obtained weapons and ammunition and trained to fight for Muslim causes in Chechnya, Kashmir, the Philippines and elsewhere.
