Eleven Islamists went on trial in Jordan on Monday for the murder of a U.S. diplomat last year but the alleged mastermind, who U.S. officials say has close links to Osama bin Laden, remained on the run. A gunman shot dead Laurence Foley on the doorstep of his home in the Jordanian capital Amman last October. It was the first killing of a Western diplomat in pro-Western Jordan and prompted a sweeping crackdown on suspected Islamic militants. At a state security court on Monday, Chief Judge Colonel Fawaz al-Baqour opened proceedings in the trial of five bearded men in the dock and six other suspects who are still on the run.
