WEB attacks and probes on Malaysian companies have been on the rise over the past 12 months as hackers focus on creating viruses that are more virulent to circumvent existing anti-virus software. According to e-Cop.net Surveillance Sdn Bhd, an average of five million attacks and probes were recorded each month, involving mainly financial institutions. Its chief executive officer Alan See said out of that figure, one million attacks were potentially serious while the rest were less risky scrip attacks. “On further screening, only five per cent of the total monthly attacks were a threat to client-servers and thus require immediate attention to stop them,” he said. See attributed the rising attacks to the proliferation of automated hacking whereby the hacker merely needs to specify the Internet protocol (IP) range of address to scan the network.
