The UN High Commission for Refugees in Venezuela announced Sunday that the hard-handed politics of Colombian President Alvaro Uribe against Colombian armed groups has generated more violence on the Colombian borders. Maria Virginia Trimarco, representative for the Commission in Venezuela, indicated that the forced exodus of displaced Colombians to neighboring countries has worsened due to Uribe’s strong stance against guerilla and paramilitary groups that operate near the borders. She stated, “Uribe came to power with large national and international popular support, despite the fact that he proposed to combat violence with more violence.
