Third Bali bomb suspect was chief coordinator, court told. An alleged leader of the Jemaah Islamiah terror group who met Osama bin Laden while both were fighting in Afghanistan went on trial yesterday for plotting, organising and carrying out the Bali bombings. Ali Gufron, alias Mukhlas, is charged with overall responsibility for the blasts that ripped through two nightclubs in Bali last October and killed 202 people. The prosecutors said he also played a major role in the financing of the bombings and in motivating two suicide bombers. He is the third key suspect to face trial after his brother Amrozi – who allegedly bought the explosives and the van used in the bombings – and the attack’s alleged field commander Imam Samudra. The prosecution has already come up against early challenges in the trials of Amrozi and Samudra. Confessions have been withdrawn, testimonies have been confusing and witnesses have refused to testify. Like both suspects, Mukhlas faces death by firing squad if convicted on several counts of terrorism. Full Story
