Four policemen were killed in Algeria when their patrol hit a bomb planted by suspected Islamic rebels, the official Algerian news agency APS said on Monday. In more violence, government troops killed 12 guerrillas in renewed bloodshed. Algeria is still grappling with the aftermath of an earthquake last month that killed 2,274 people and caused up to $5 billion worth of damage. APS said another policeman was wounded in Sunday’s bomb explosion on a road near Tizi-Niala village in Tizi-Ouzou province, about 90 km (50 miles) east of the capital Algiers. Eight policemen died 12 days ago in a rebel ambush in the same province. Government troops shelled a rebel stronghold in the rugged mountainous area of Kaf Lehssene in Bouira province, about 90 km (50 miles) east of Algiers, killing 10 rebels on Sunday, Le Matin daily said on Monday.
