Israel stood firm under a barrage of criticism over its failed attempt to eliminate a senior Hamas leader, as it braced itself for the promised “earthquake” of retaliation. As the press and opposition politicians echoed a rare US rebuke over the timing of Tuesday’s strike against Abdul Aziz al-Rantissi, Israel continued to release information to justify it. Military radio said Israeli security services had intelligence on plans for 53 anti-Israeli attacks, half of them from Hamas. According to the intelligence material gathered by Israel, Rantissi had recently advocated resuming suicide attacks inside Israel during a recent meeting with the movement’s spiritual leader, Sheikh Ahmad Yassin.
