UK set for Congo peace role

The UK is expected to announce in coming days how many troops it will contribute the United Nations’ peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. On Friday, the UN Security Council authorised the sending of a French-led multi-national force of more than a 1000 troops to try to prevent massacres in DR Congo’s Ituri province. The UK has already agreed to contribute in “whatever way is appropriate” but discussions continue on the details of its involvement. French troops are expected to make up most of the 1,200-strong temporary force, which is only likely to be up to 300 British troops. Full Story
