Authorities said they made an arrest Thursday in an identity-theft case that stemmed from the suspect’s job at U.S. Healthworks in Modesto. Investigators said Denyce Yvonne Spears’ victims included a female client of U.S. Healthworks, a company that specializes in occupational medicine and rehabilitation, and pre-employment physicals and drug screening. Spears is accused of using stolen personal information to obtain credit cards and rent an apartment. The victim, 22-year-old Tamika Barney of Stockton, “didn’t even know that she was an ID theft victim until collection agencies started contacting her,” said Kipp Loving, a Turlock police detective who is assigned to the Sacramento Valley Hi-Tech Crimes Task Force. Investigators said Spears stole clients’ data from the U.S. Healthworks computer system from September through November 2002, when she worked at the company’s clinic on Mitchell Road across from Modesto Airport. Besides taking Barney’s data, Spears is accused of retrieving information on 11 patients who shared the same name as her boyfriend. Spears gave him the Social Security number for one of the other patients, and her boyfriend then opened several fraudulent credit accounts of his own, investigators said. Full Story
