Leftist guerrillas said they were awaiting a reply from the Colombian government on a proposed prisoner exchange — kidnap victims for jailed rebels — in a statement seen here. The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) “unhurriedly awaits the government’s reply to its proposal for a prisoner exchange,” the Marxist group said in the statement, dated Saturday and posted on the Internet. The rebels repeated that they were “in a position to guarantee the physical integrity of the prisoners in their charge, but only if the government desists from adventuring an escape by force of weapons.” President Alvaro Uribe’s government came under heavy criticism after a May 5 jungle rescue operation by the military that ended with the FARC murdering 10 of its captives.
