Norwegian officials and most of the country’s 4.5 million people remained mystified yesterday about their inclusion on a hit list attributed to al-Qaeda that was broadcast on Al-Jazeera television this week. The 11-minute audiotape, apparently made by al-Qaeda deputy Ayman Zawahri, urges Muslims to attack Western embassies and businesses, and not “allow the Americans, British, Australians and Norwegians and other crusaders, killers of your brothers in Iraq” to live in Muslim countries. “We are surprised,” said Ingvard Havnen, Norway’s ambassador to Canada. “Obviously we take the threat seriously.” Foreign Ministry spokesman Karsten Klepsvik concurred in a telephone interview from Oslo, “We have absolutely no idea why; whatever we say would be pure speculation.” Full Story
