IN SINGAPORE, home users are the most vulnerable when computer viruses and worms are on a rampage. In recent assaults, nine out of 10 computers infected were in homes, said MessageLabs, the world’s foremost e-mail security company. Its statistics show how ill-prepared the average Singaporean home user is in tackling the mountain of nasty electronic bugs that worm their way into computers via e-mail, instant messaging or even via Internet downloads. Last week, when Fizzer hit our shores, 90 per cent of the computers infected were home PCs. On May 13, all the 119 cases found with SirCam, which has been around since 2001, were home users. Unlike companies which update their anti-virus software regularly or use MessageLabs’ Internet e-mail scanning system, home users do it intermittently, said Mr Alex Shipp, MessageLabs’ senior anti-virus technologist.
