United States officials said today that they were closing the American Embassy here and two consulates until Sunday, as Americans here were warned of an “imminent” threat of terror attacks inside the kingdom. Britain and Germany also closed their embassies here until late this week. The decision to close the three United States diplomatic outposts was made in response to the latest intelligence reports that detected a sharp increase in “chatter” among suspected terrorists describing plans for a series of attacks here, American officials said today. “The embassy continues to receive credible information that further terrorist attacks are being planned against unspecified targets in Saudi Arabia,” the American Embassy here warned Americans in a statement posted today on its Web site. “In response to information that some strikes may be imminent, the embassy in Riyadh and the consulates in Jiddah and Dhahran will be closed” on Wednesday.
